Use This TemplateHow to Write a Resume That Gets Interviews
A resume has one job: earn you a phone call. Recruiters spend roughly seven seconds on a first scan, so structure matters more than decoration. Put your name and contact details at the top, follow with a 2-3 line professional summary, then experience in reverse-chronological order, then education and skills.
Write bullets that prove impact
Weak bullets list duties: "Responsible for managing social media." Strong bullets show outcomes: "Grew Instagram following from 2K to 18K in 8 months, driving 31% of demo requests." Start each bullet with an action verb, include a number wherever possible, and keep bullets to one or two lines.
ATS tips that actually matter
- Use standard headings: Professional Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills — creative headings confuse parsers.
- Save and submit as PDF unless the posting asks for .docx.
- Include keywords from the job description naturally in your experience bullets.
- Avoid text boxes, headers/footers with critical info, and multi-column layouts for the main content.
Sections explained
Professional Summary: 2-3 lines on your years of experience, core strengths, and the value you deliver. Tailor it per application.
Work Experience: Job title, company, location, dates, then 3-5 achievement bullets per role. Lead with your most recent and most relevant roles.
Skills: A compact list of hard skills (tools, languages, certifications). Skip soft-skill clichés like "team player" here — demonstrate those in bullets instead.
Education: Degree, school, graduation year. New graduates can add relevant coursework and GPA (if above 3.5).
Frequently Asked Questions
An ATS-friendly resume uses a single-column layout, standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills), common fonts, and no text inside images or tables. All three of our templates follow these rules so parsing software reads them correctly.
If you have under 10 years of experience, one page is the standard and forces you to prioritize. Senior professionals with extensive relevant history can use two pages. Every template here is designed to look complete on a single page.
PDF, unless the job posting specifically asks for Word. PDF preserves your formatting on every device. Use our browser print-to-PDF button to generate a clean PDF from any template.
For most applicants, a 2-3 line professional summary works better than an objective — it tells the employer what you bring, not what you want. Career changers and new graduates can still use a brief objective to explain their direction.
Mirror the job posting's keywords in your skills and experience bullets, reorder bullets so the most relevant achievements come first, and adjust your summary to echo the role's top requirements. Save a master resume, then create a tailored copy per application.
